A series of life size photographs on the human body as a self-concealing device.
The perfect self as projected by society is interpreted differently by all.
As a result, any attempt to conform to this ideal is futile. Conformity can not exist within the multitude of different individual interpretations and enactments of this ideal.
Tensions are provoked by the question of whether or not society will accept us for who we are.
Out of fear society might not accept us, we fit ourselves into a box that will.
This social fear results in the never-ending search for balance.
Balance between yourself as a representation of how you see yourself
— THE INNER SELF —
and yourself as a presentation of how you feel society wants you to be
— THE OUTER SELF —
We attempt to conform to perfection and hide ourselves in the process. Through our expectations of acceptance we create our outer selves.
We cover up in ourselves what we in turn shun away from in others. Because of this we fear certain self-perceived flaws might in turn cause society to shun away from us.
The DISPENSABLE SELF is the resulting combination of all self-perceived mental inferiorities and all self-perceived physical imperfections—as well as the culmination of the emotions these provoke.
The dispensable self is made up of everything the inner self tries to bury from the outside world when it creates the outer self.
INNER SELF - OUTER SELF = DISPENSABLE SELFF
The self perceived shortcomings one feels must be hidden away within oneself form the seeds from which will eventually spring the anger and envy towards those who possess these same ‘shortcomings’ but who do not perceive them as such. They are also the source of frustration towards the overarching system that instills in us this idea for the need of self-censorship.
The dangers of the dispensable self lay in the fact that when you bury parts of yourself for too long, you inevitably create a destructive force that claws at everything the outer self is v-carefully trying to uphold.
The long term conception—and burial—of the dispensable self forms the foundation of inner turmoil and social angst.
